Char Kuey Teow

Char kuey teow is a noodle based dish that is one of the most popular dishes in Penang, it is also found Singapore, other parts of Malaysia and also Indonesia.

The main ingredient is of course the kuey teow which is a type of wide chinese noodle.

One of the most compelling difference between Char kuey teow found in Singapore (which i am based) & Penang is that the Char Kuay Teow found in Penang is the “Wet” type which means it comes with gravy unlike the Singapore version.

Normal “dry” Char kuey teow commonly found in Singapore
“Wet” Char Kuey Teow found in Penang

Traditionally a chinese dish but Char Kuey Teow is also prepared by Malay muslims and their version does not include pork, pork fat etc.

For me personally i tried the Malay version in 2 places in Penang and following will be my review.

1)Mady char koey teow.

It is located @ batu ferringghi. I have planned out my day, i was @ batu ferringhi doing water sports and after that i headed for my 1st Penang Char Koey Teow.

Normally there will be 2 choices, Normal Char kuey teow or special. Special means it comes with prawns. I have forgotten how much it cost per dish but i guess it was RM6 or RM8.

It is really good! Much much much better than the normal Char Kuey teow i ever had in Singapore.  Superb!

The only slight negative point will be the portion is quite small, i ate only 1 serving but in all honesty i think i can have 3, no problem. Nevertheless it is really a delicious and cheap meal, together with the drink it cost me lest than RM20.

2) Sany Char Koey Teow

Sany-Char-Kuey-TeowThis is the other stall that i tried, it is located @ 4, Lorong Mahsuri 2, 11950 Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.

It is nearby the aiport and quite a distance from my hotel in Lorong Kinta. Took a taxi there which cost RM30, according the driver it normally cost RM35 but i got a discount since he also knows i am treating him.

This place is very popular, it was quite crowded when i get there. Whenever i ask a taxi driver in Penang which the best Char Kuey Teow, all i have met will say Sany Char Kuey Teow and as expected it did not dissapont. The gravy is delicous, it seems to be mixed with egg and this makes the gravy a bit thick in texture.

I get the Special Char Kuey Teow which comes with prawn and it was quite a generous amount of 5-6 prawns per dish. 1 serving is not enough for me and it i ate 2 servings.

It is really delicious.

At the end of the day the 2 places is equally good and it is hard for me to choose which is better. If you have the time, why not try both?!
